◆ THE HOWL · EST. JULY 12, 2021 ◆

AWOOOO.

The sound the pack makes. It started as a howl in the comments in 2021 and became the cry of a community that refused to disappear. Five years, ten thousand hand-drawn doges, one real shelter, and a whole lot of howling.

◆ WHAT IT MEANS ◆

AWOO is how the pack says everything. Welcome. We're here. We did it. A dog got adopted — AWOO. A holder flew to Tanzania — AWOO. Five years and still drawing — AWOO.

It was never a ticker or a roadmap that held this together. It was a howl — a dumb, joyful, dog-coded howl that meant “you're one of us.” Doge Pound and dogs became the same thing. That's the culture. Everything else on this page is just proof.

5 yrs
AND STILL DRAWING

Almost every project from the summer of 2021 is gone. We built a shelter.

◆ HOW WE GOT HERE · SIX CHAPTERS ◆

THE WHOLE STORY.

01◆ 2021 · THE IDEA ◆

It started as a drawing.

Early 2021. Kyle Van Dyn Hoven is sitting in front of an iPad drawing cartoon doges. Not because there's a roadmap. Not because there's a marketing plan. Because the doges are fun, the line work feels right, and the world is suddenly paying attention to small projects with a strong point of view.

On July 12, 2021, the OG mint goes live. Ten thousand hand-drawn Doges, each one made by hand, no generative tricks. They sell out. Twitter notices. And in the replies, the comments, the Discord — a howl starts going up. AWOO. The premise — doges helping dogs — is still just a tweet under a profile picture. A promise made before there's anything to point to.

And then the harder part begins: keeping it.

02◆ LATE 2021 · THE PIVOT ◆

Most projects pump and forget.

The 2021 wave produces hundreds of projects with grand ambitions. Almost all of them disappear within a year — mint, peak, fade, ghost. The dogs-helping-dogs promise becomes a place where this project could have done exactly the same.

Instead, Kyle commits. In November 2021, The Doge Pound makes an initial $52,000 grant to Share Tanzania, a UK Registered Charity (number 1169474) already doing the work on the ground. A site is identified just outside Moshi, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. There is land. There is a budget. There is a plan to break ground.

It's the moment the brand stops being a Twitter avatar and starts being a thing that has to exist in the physical world.

03◆ 2022 · THE SHELTER ◆

Concrete, fencing, kennels, a vet bay.

On July 30, 2022, the Uchira facility opens its doors. Concrete, fencing, kennels, a vet bay, and an intake list of strays from the surrounding villages. By January that year Kyle had already landed on the cover-line of Fortune's NFT explainer — the first long press cycle. By the time the doors opened, the story had a setting.

The first dogs walked in and were given names: Tumaini, Simba, Kibo. Not numbers. Not generative IDs. Real names a child could shout across a yard. Amani is hired as the on-the-ground caretaker, the steady human the dogs see every day. The Doge Pound stops being a website with a roadmap. It becomes a shelter with a feeding schedule.

The line between art project and animal-welfare organization quietly gets erased.

04◆ 2023 – 2024 · THE QUIET YEARS ◆

The market goes quiet. We don't.

By 2023, most of the 2021 wave has gone dark. Discords abandoned, roadmaps deleted. The market is brutal and the loudest projects often have the least to show. The Doge Pound takes a quieter, more substantial shape.

Weekly journal entries start coming out of Tanzania — photos of the dogs, updates from Amani, vet receipts, intake numbers. The first holder trip happens in November 2023: real holders flying to Kilimanjaro, walking the kennels, meeting the dogs whose names they'd only read on a screen.

Nobody is loud about it. The work is the point. The howl stays up the whole time.

05◆ 2025 – 2026 · THE CONNECTION ◆

Every Doge, tied to a real dog.

Through 2025 and into 2026, the brand makes a deliberate choice: build for the people who actually own dogs. The /find-your-doge page launches, permanently pairing every NFT in the collection to a real shelter dog by token-ID range.

Suddenly each Doge isn't just a profile picture — it's a quiet sponsorship of a specific dog with a specific name in a specific kennel. Look one up and you meet the dog, read this week's update, and see what your group has funded. Around 5,000 holders are in the Pack. Over $1.4M has moved into the shelter and adoption programs since 2021.

The brand stops trying to be everything and becomes exactly what it always promised: doges helping dogs.

06◆ NOW · 2026 ◆

Five years. Still howling.

Today the promise is simply kept, on a schedule. The Kilimanjaro shelter still runs. The vet program still pays its bills. Amani still posts the weekly journal. Holders still fly out to walk the kennels. Every Doge still points to a real dog.

Five years in, the story is no longer about the mint. It's about what the mint paid for — and the howl that keeps the pack together while the work gets done.

AWOO.

◆ JULY 12, 2026 · FIVE YEARS TO THE DAY ◆

FIVE YEARS.
STILL HERE.

Five years to the day since the first Doge minted. The summer-2021 class is a graveyard of dead Discords and deleted roadmaps. We spent those five years drawing dogs and building a shelter. That's the whole flex. AWOO.
